Skiers at the top of a piste under a bank of cloud, lifts running behind them

Morzine, Portes du Soleil · Sunday 7 to Sunday 14 March 2027

The Morzine Ski Week

Seven days on one of the biggest linked ski areas in the world, with the food sorted and a group to ski it with. We have not booked it yet. Here is exactly where we are.

The honest bit first

Skiing is expensive. There is no version of this trip that is cheap, and I am not going to pretend otherwise or bury the number at the bottom of the page.

A week in the Alps with your accommodation, your food, your lift pass and your transfers covered is going to land at roughly £1,950 per person. That is in line with what any decent operator charges for a catered week, and it is close to what it costs us to put on.

We expect £1,950 a head. It will not go above £2,100. If it comes in under, you pay less.

That is a promise rather than a range. I would rather give you a ceiling you can trust than a vague band you have to guess at.

What I have not done is book anything. No chalet, no beds, nothing. That is deliberate, and it is the whole reason this page exists.

How this works

  1. 1

    You pay £50 now

Refundable. It does nothing except count towards the number I need.

  2. 2

Sunday 15 November, I count up

10 or more and the trip is on. Fewer and I refund everyone, tell you straight, and nobody is out of pocket.

  3. 3

I book the property and confirm the exact price

You will know the real number, and the actual address, before you owe another penny. If it lands above £2,100 you can walk away with your £50.

  4. 4

The balance is due around 6 December 2026

Your £50 comes off it. That is earlier than our usual trips, and there is a reason, which is in the questions below.

Hold a place for £50

10 needed by Sunday 15 November. Refunded in full if it does not go ahead.

Only so I know whether to line up a ski school. Never skied is a perfectly good answer.

Not binding. It helps me pick a property with the right rooms in it.

Refunded in full if the trip does not go ahead. Card handled by Stripe, we never see it.

Where we are going

Morzine sits in the middle of the Portes du Soleil, which links twelve resorts across France and Switzerland on one pass: around 650km of piste, one of the largest linked areas in the world. You can spend a day riding across the border to Champéry and back and still not see the same run twice.

That size is the reason we picked it. A group of ten will never all want the same thing, and here they do not have to. There is wide gentle ground above the village, long tree-lined cruising for anyone happy on a red, proper terrain parks up at Avoriaz, and the Swiss Wall for anyone who wants to frighten themselves before lunch.

Morzine itself is a working town rather than a purpose-built resort, which means proper bars and restaurants and somewhere to go on the night the kitchen is closed. We are looking only at places you can walk to a lift from, because nobody enjoys a bus at eight in the morning with their boots on.

A skier stopped on a groomed piste with jagged peaks on the horizon
Rock spires standing out of a wide snowfield under a deep blue sky
A wide empty piste on a bluebird day with mountains behind
Two skiers on a slope above a sea of cloud filling the valley
A skier dropping into a pisted slope beside pine trees
Gondolas crossing a snowfield with the sun breaking through cloud

The week is Sunday 7 to Sunday 14 March 2027, Sunday to Sunday. That is one week after the French school holidays finish, which means quieter slopes and better value than the week before it.

What the price covers

Not included, and worth budgeting for:

All in, someone skiing every day with kit hired out there should expect the week to come to somewhere around £2,350 to £2,600 once flights, hire and lunches are counted. I would rather you knew that now than worked it out in February.

What I do not know yet, in one list

Which property. The exact price inside the range. Whether dinner is five nights or six. Whether I can get the lift passes bundled or you buy your own. I am talking to several places in Morzine right now and I will tell you each of these as I learn it, rather than going quiet until I have a tidy answer.

The questions you are actually asking

Why are you taking money before you know the price?

Because the two things are stuck together. Every chalet in Morzine wants a deposit of one to two thousand pounds to hold it, and they want it now. I cannot get a firm price without committing to a property, and I am not committing to a property without knowing roughly how many people are coming.

Something has to go first, and I would rather it was a refundable £50 from you than a couple of grand of mine on a guess. You are not locked into an unknown number: when I have the real price you get told, and if it is above £2,100 you can take your money and go.

What actually happens to my £50?

One of three things. The trip runs and it comes off your balance. We do not reach 10 people and I refund it in full. Or the price comes back higher than £2,100, you decide it is not for you, and I refund it in full.

There is no version where you pay and get nothing.

Why not just run a free interest form?

We have, on other trips, and it tells you less than you would hope. Plenty of people click "keen" on a Tuesday and are busy by March. A small real payment tells me something a tick box never will, and that is the only reason it exists.

Why is the balance due so early?

Our UK trips take the balance 60 days out. This one is 90, so around 6 December 2026. That is not us being awkward: chalet operators want a chunky deposit to hold the place and the rest 8 to 12 weeks before you arrive, so the money has to come in before it goes out.

If paying it in one go is a problem, say so and we will split it into monthly payments instead. I would much rather do that than have you drop off.

How good a skier do I need to be?

You do not need to be any good. Come if you have skied every winter since you were six. Come if you have never had a pair of skis on. I am not setting a bar and I do not want one.

The area is big enough that people at completely different levels ski all week and still eat together every night. If you are learning, book a few mornings with a school, and you have got the rest of the day with everyone else. Tell me and I will sort that out for you.

Who is leading the skiing?

Nobody from Jove, and I want to be clear about that. France reserves paid ski instruction to instructors holding its own state qualification, and quite rightly. So we ski as a group of adults who can ski, and if you want teaching you book a local instructor, which I will happily help you do.

I am coming, and I am sorting the week out, but I am the host rather than your guide.

Is it awkward coming on your own?

Almost everyone on our trips does. You will be sharing a room with someone, eating with the group every evening, and riding up chairlifts in twos and threes all week. By Monday lunchtime nobody is thinking about it.

What if there is no snow?

Early March is one of the more reliable weeks of the season. I am not going to promise you a powder week, because nobody honest can, and I will be straight about the one real weakness of this area: Morzine village sits at 1,000m, which is low, so in a thin year the runs back down to the village suffer and you ride a lift home instead.

The skiing itself goes up to around 2,400m above Avoriaz and holds snow well. The trip runs whatever the forecast, and we are not going to cancel because conditions are just average.

About the photos: these are mine, from ski trips I have been on before. They are not of this trip, because this trip has not happened yet, and they are not of Morzine. We do not have glossy promotional shots of a week we have not run, and I would rather say that than borrow someone else’s and let you assume they were ours. There will be real ones after March.
