How to get There
We’ve intentionally chosen a spot which is easy to get to and in the heart of the action. You can of course drive to North Lees Campsite but it’s also very accessible by train. Get a train to Sheffield (just over 2 hours) and then a short train, bus or taxi to Hathersage - the campsite is a 20 min walk from there.

Absolutely! It is however worth noting that when we go away on expeditions, we always recommend people have their own tents so getting some practice organising your kit and putting up a tent in a controlled environment is very useful.
-
It’s very important to get top quality kit you can rely on and use for multiple adventure activities and trips.
In our experience we see too many people turn up with kit not fit for purpose. So we’ve decided to help you get started with the following:
Nalgene 1L water bottle - an excellent reusable bottle we love and have used for years.
Black Diamond headtorch - a poor quality headtorch will let you down when you need it and worse still, can be unsafe! You need something reliable and bright.
Sea to Summit 5L dry bag - waterproofing your kit is essential! Everything you carry should be kept as dry as possible. Sure you can use plastic bags but a. they’re not environmentally friendly and b. they’ll easily rip and let water in. Sea to Summit make the best dry bags in our view - great quality and pack small.
Real Meal bar - we’re big fans of these! They pack a huge punch for long days, taste amazing and pack small.
-
Absolutely not! This weekend is about making adventure accessible to as many people as possible. We’re confident you’ll have a great time the Jove Club way and feel inspired about what you can achieve.
Final Words
We’ve focussed on three main things for this trip - 1. it’s low cost - 2. it’s extremely accessible - 3. it’s designed to give you skills you can use.
You’ll notice most of our weekend trips are between £300-£400 - we’ll barely cover our costs for this one… Why then are we doing it? We mean it when we say we want to make you a more competent adventurer, help connect you to other people with similar interests and ambitions, and show you how to have an amazing weekend the Jove Club way!
We want as many people to come along this trip as possible - if you can bring a friend, we’ll give you both £10 off.
Activity kit - stuff you’ll wear -
Boots or suitable approach shoes
Trail running shoes - nothing fancy, but tailored towards wet, slippery ground
Two pairs of walking socks (minimum)
Walking trousers (or shorts if you prefer)
Thermal top / base layer
Warm layers (would recommend a fleece + lightweight down jacket)
Waterproof jacket + trousers
A thin soft-shell jacket you can use for running and hiking
Underwear
Suitable running / gym tops
Running shorts
Flip flops / sandals (optional for campsite)
In your daypack -
1 litres of water minimum (we’ll give you a 1L Nalgene waterbottle)
Small first aid kit containing foot care kit, plasters, tick remover, painkillers as a minimum
Insect repellant
Waterproof bags / dry bags (we’ll give you a 5L dry bag but you may want something bigger to line your pack with)
Head torch plus spare batteries (we’ll give you a head torch)
Charging block - useful to have as access to charing points will be limited!
Survival bag (small foil blanket)
Baseball cap or sun hat
Sunglasses
Sun cream
Two pairs of gloves (if one pair gets wet, you’ll want a spare pair)
Warm hat
Whistle
Walking poles (optional)
Map - OS Explorer Map - OL1 Dark Peak Area, compass and map case (or waterproof map)
Snacks/lunch for each day (we’ll give you a ‘Real Meal’ bar)
A 20-30L bag is fine
Camping kit -
A small three seasons tent - doesn’t have to be expensive! You can get very good tents at Decathlon for a reasonable price
A sleeping bag
Inflatable pillow
Inflatable mattress or roll mat
Tissues
Toothbrush + toothpaste
Eye mask
Lighter
Knife
Spork
Cooking equipment (e.g. Jetboil, MSR pocket rocket, gas canisters) **if you’ve never used cooking equipment before, it’s a great time to practice! You can absolutely get away with cold breakfasts etc. but we’d recommend taking the opportunity to workout how to use a camping stove before taking on bigger trips
Camp meals - depending on what you choose to do on Friday evening, you may only need breakfast on both days as we’ll be out during the day and out for dinner Saturday evening
Optional small book or headphones
Additional -
You may want a dry change of clothes for the pub / way home
As a general rule, the more stuff you take - the more you have to look after! We’d recommend keeping things very simple for this trip - if it’s not essential, leave it at home. We’ll have a few vehicles at the campsite so you’ll be able to leave anything valuable that you don’t need for the day activity in one.
