Jove London Kit List / Recommendations

At Jove Club, we believe that being properly equipped is the foundation of every great outdoor experience. Whether you're running along the river, bouldering or joining us for an intensive training session in Battersea Park, having the right gear isn't just about comfort – it's about safety and confidence.

Jove Run:

Base kit for all road / city conditions:

  1. Suitable road running shoes - they don’t have to be expensive but they do have to fit well and so we’d recommend going to a specialist run shop to get a gait analysis. It’s easy to spend a lot of money on different types of shoe for speed work and racing but if you’re a beginner, something all round will work for everything!

  2. Sports / running socks - these definitely don’t have to be expensive. Most sports socks are good enough. Again the important thing is wearing something comfortable that works well with your chose shoe.

  3. Shorts - any sports shorts will do so long as they’re comfy and they don’t chafe! If they are able to carry essentials like keys/phone then that’s a bonus. Personally I’ve found investing in fewer more expensive shorts worthwhile. Feel free to ask for some recommendations at your next run class.

  4. Undershorts - these are likely better at preventing chafing than regular cotton underwear and are certainly more comfortable when you sweat or get wet!

  5. Top/t-shirt - moisture wicking over cotton. I’ve never noticed a real difference between expensive vs cheap. So long as it’s comfy fit and doesn’t chafe, it will do the job! If they’re

  6. Cap - I think wearing a cap is a must all year round! The benefits are obvious in the summer but they are also great for when it rains and help keep your head warm in the winter!

  7. Water bottle - we always recommend coming to every session well hydrated. Speed sessions will generally be based around one area so you’ll be able to leave a bottle by your session leader. For aerobic / slow paced sessions you’ll need something you can carry.

  8. Sports sunglasses (optional) - similar to wearing a cap, I think sunglasses are useful for much of year unless it’s dark or raining. They not only protect you from the sun but also prevent bugs/dirt etc. getting into your eyes. If you are going to wear sunglasses, we at Jove Club would also recommend a versatile and robust pair that can be used for an array of different activities.

  9. Any medication you need (if applicable) - if you take any medication you might need, please don’t forget it.

  10. Phone carrier (optional) - these are fairly inexpensive but very useful to store your phone/keys/wallet.

In cold/wet/winter conditions:

  1. Wind/waterproof jacket - these are tricky to get right but for London running when you’re not far away from shelter, I’d suggest something very lightweight and breathable. The greater the water repellant properties are, the less breathable it will be and so it’s difficult to avoid getting wet from sweat! As such something windproof should be the priority you at least you remain somewhat warm.

  2. Warm running hat - something thin and easy to put in your pocket in case you get too hot!

  3. Leggings - these can replace undershorts on colder days or be worn stand alone making them very versatile.

  4. Thin running gloves - these speak for themselves but something thin / small you can take off and put in your pocket if required.

  5. Thermal top - this can be something that replaces your running top or goes above it. At Jove Club we’re all about using the same kit for multiple disciplines where possible! As such, long sleeve merino wool base layers do a great job and can be used to ski, hike, mountaineer etc.

  6. Head torch (optional) - as the winter months roll in, we’ll inevitably run when it’s dark. However, we will generally be in well lit areas so a head torch is not essential but feel free to wear one if you feel more comfortable. Investing in a decent head torch is recommended as there are many applications on Jove Adventure trips.

In warm/summer conditions:

  1. Sun cream/SPF lip balm - I wear sun cream all year round but am especially conscious in the summer, naturally!

High tech:

  1. Fitness watch - less important for Jove Run sessions as your leader will set the distances etc. but if you do want to record/track times then a watch is great!

  2. Heart rate monitor - these provide more accurate HR tracking vs a watch so one to consider if you want to start event specific training.

Your run leader will always carry a water bottle and snacks along with a mobile phone in case of emergency.

Jove Fitness

The kit for Jove Fitness is essentially the same! If you wear particularly expensive running shoes, you may prefer to wear something cheaper and multi-purpose so save wear and tear.

Jove Climb

Whatever you feel comfortable with! If you’ve never climbed before, shorts and t-shirt is absolutely fine. You can hire shoes at the wall. If you want to invest in your own kit, then see a few tips below:

  1. Shoes - we would always recommend speaking to a specialist retailer (a climbing shop) in person for a proper fitting. Buying online or from a high street shop can waste a lot of money!

  2. Chalk bag - many members I’m sure will let you use their chalk but having your own bag and chalk is very useful.

Being properly equipped isn't about having the most expensive gear – it's about being prepared, safe, and ready to make the most of every activity. At Jove Club, we're here to support you in building not just your kit, but your confidence in the great outdoors.
